Recent Franchise Transactions
Seven Big Four franchises traded in the twelve months through August 2026, $55.2B of enterprise value in total. Two of them changed control twice inside fourteen months. Media contracts pay the NFL alone $10B a year, Super Bowl LX peaked at a record 137.8M viewers, and supply has been fixed at 124 franchises since 2021. Repricing this fast, against supply this tight, has no precedent.

Acceleration

The current window measured against the same window twenty years prior
Twenty years ago the Big Four market cleared roughly two billion dollars of control value across two full calendar years, and no league permitted a fund to hold equity in a franchise. Today a single asset can transact for six times that entire aggregate. Both windows below count one control transaction per franchise, most recent first, so the comparison is asset for asset.

What changed structurally

The step up is not only a function of media rights and franchise scarcity. Each league opened its capital structure to institutional money on a specific date, and each opening produced a wave of minority transactions that reset published valuations upward, which in turn reset the reference price for the next control sale.
When each league opened to institutional capital
MLB2019First of the North American major leagues to permit private equity ownership.
NBA2020Approved dedicated funds for passive minority positions.
NHL2021Followed with a comparable minority framework.
NFLAug 2024Seven approved firms. 10 percent cap per team, 30 percent league wide, 75 percent owner approval, six year minimum hold, six teams maximum per fund.

Franchise value growth

Average franchise value across the Big Four leagues, decade anchor against the current cycle
Underneath the transaction prints is a decade of compounding in the marks themselves. The NFL, NBA and NHL have roughly quadrupled since 2016; baseball has slightly better than doubled. The divergence, not the level, is what buyers price against.

Volume

The breadth of activity behind the headline prices
Beneath the headline control sales: a minority market now roughly half of all global sports transactions, a manager level consolidation behind half of institutional ownership, and a transaction count that has more than doubled in two years.

Additional Big Four positions in the current cycle

Beyond the transactions detailed in Section 01, the following positions were established or restructured across the Big Four leagues in the same window. Terms were not disclosed in several cases; those are marked accordingly.

Notable transactions

Activity outside the Big Four U.S. leagues, including European football, Indian cricket and manager level consolidation
Outside the Big Four perimeter, the same thesis: European football clearing control at multi billion valuations under American sponsorship, Indian cricket institutionalizing inside a single season, and the largest transaction in the set being the manager itself.

Terms and prior marksTerms as reported by ESPN, CNBC, Sportico, Front Office Sports, Reuters, Sky Sports and The Athletic on the dates cited in each row, and by Apollo in its own releases. Prior marks are drawn from CNBC NFL valuations (Sep 2025), Forbes MLB valuations (Mar 2026), Sportico valuations and prior reported transaction prices; each row states which mark was used.
Engine and audienceMedia packages as announced: NFL $110B over eleven years (S&P Global Kagan); NBA $76B over eleven years (NBA, ESPN, WSJ); MLB three year ESPN, NBC and Netflix agreements (MLB, Nov 2025); NHL U.S. $4.5B over seven years (ESPN) and C$11B over twelve years in Canada (Rogers, NHL, Apr 2025), combined at prevailing exchange as a computed run rate. Franchise valuesThe 2016 anchor is Forbes, all four leagues from one published comparison. Current figures are Sportico's latest cycle per league: NFL Aug 2026, MLB 2026, NBA and NHL Oct 2025. Each rate is computed across its own interval. Aggregates use that year's franchise count, which moves the NHL from thirty to thirty two clubs.
Computed figuresEvery rate, multiple, aggregate, window value and ratio is computed from the figures shown and is not reported by any source. Both two year windows count one announced control transaction per franchise, most recent where an asset traded twice. The inflation adjusted ratio rests on a modeled mid 2026 CPI-U level and carries a MODELED tag; nominal figures do not.
StatusFive of the seven Section 01 transactions are signed or agreed and not yet closed. Scheduled votes: Timberwolves and Lynx at the NBA Board of Governors, Sep 2026; Falcons, Oct 2026. The Seahawks were ratified unanimously Aug 26, 2026 and close in September. Figures may change as deals finalize.
This document is a summary of publicly reported transaction activity prepared for discussion. It is not an offer, a solicitation, a valuation opinion, or investment advice. Reported terms are frequently incomplete: headline enterprise values commonly differ from cash consideration because of retained stakes, debt, staged tranches and escalators, and several transactions in this set are explicitly structured across multiple closings. Figures should be treated as directional until definitive documents are public.
